Everyone wants to make it in life and as soon as possible. Most times, we don’t even care about the heads that roll or the lives that were lost, as long as we make it in life and as quick as possible. We might not need to play the games of power as speculated by Robert Greene in the book ’48 Laws of Power’, we might not need to let others die so that we live, you don’t need many to hold the blade while you lick the blood but there are some things that must be found in a successful life.
In order to make a difference in your own world or
generation, you need to acquire these properties. These characteristics are likely
to be naturally intrinsic in successful people, however, you can check your
life and make adjustment after reading this article.
There
are three major things associated with successful people in life and absent in
the lives of those that complain and murmur. Other things may be added to the three;
however, these three are very necessary and important. So let us go through
them;
#1 Maturity
Maturity
is what makes you extraordinary when you are around ordinary people. Is there a
way to learn maturity, well, I wouldn’t know, but I know it can be cultured. Bob Dylan says, ‘How many
roads must a man walk down before you call him a man?’ I don’t believe
there are a particular number of experiences to guarantee one’s maturity;
however, maturity is best gained through experience.
Encarta at one point says Maturity means showing
the mental, emotional, or physical characteristics associated with a fully
developed adult person and another expression says Showing qualities gained by
development and experience. Therefore,
maturity can be gained through experience. Well, I would say,
Maturity is the ability to remain calm even in tense situations. Such that
when your aspirations don’t fall through, your decisions went awry or your
projections were off target, you still remain calm and handle the situation as if
you were aware of the outcome.
This is very essential especially in the business world. Success of a business requires a lot of risks and the result most times are unpredictable, maturity helps to handle the results whether they are favorable or not. Maturity will make you see your earlier mistakes and make adjustment. It will help you to respond rather than react to situations. Therefore, maturity is a necessity in a life that would be successful.
Alas,
after a certain age every man is responsible for his face - Albert Camus. As you
pass from the tender years of youth into harsh and embittered manhood, make
sure you take with you on your journey all the human emotions! Don't leave them
on the road, for you will not pick them up afterwards! - Nikolay Gogol.
#2 Emotional
Intelligence
A common core of personal and social
abilities has proven to be the key ingredient in people's success: emotional
intelligence
- Daniel Goleman
Another very important part of a
successful man is emotional intelligence. According to Daniel Goleman, ‘Emotional
intelligence carries much more weight than IQ in determining who emerges as a
leader.’ This particular ability and property helps to handle situations
that are beyond capacity. There are those that look down on one on the journey
of life, EI helps to handle such people and most times ignore them.

Even when
the odds are against one on the journey of life, things are not going one way
or bad news keep flying up and down, EI helps us to keep going. It helps to see
the positive part of all situations and think it as one of the sacrifices to be
made to get to the top. It makes you to be above pathetic situations and those
that can make you have bad decisions. You add little emotions to business and
much brain and thinking. ‘The happiest
moment of a man is also his weakest’ – Anonymous. ‘We make the worst decisions
when we are angry’.
When you see yourself adding emotions to life journey,
taking risk, business, relationship, marriage instead of using your brain and
thinking of best decisions before executing them, you lack Emotional
Intelligence and you will be very imbalanced. It shows you can’t be trusted
with decisions because you can leak it under any type of pressure. Therefore, Emotional
Intelligence is very necessary in the journey of life.
#3 Self Discipline
Finally, we will discuss the third
part and which I believe is the most important. Speak when you are angry—and you'll make the best speech you'll ever
regret - Laurence J. Peter.
Self-discipline is a major part of any successful man. It is the ability to do
the right thing even if you were not told. François Rabelais says ‘How shall I be able to rule over others,
that have not full power and command of myself’.
You might be given a large
amount of money and no one will be scared of how you will spend it. You might
be given an assignment to handle a large company and nobody will fear if you
will bring down the company with your indiscipline. Few of the characteristics
of Self-Discipline is the ability to reason right even in tight situations,
opportunity to steal but wouldn’t do it, opportunity to betray but you wouldn’t
do it. Having this character doesn’t mean you are weak, incompetent, and docile
or any other mean or negative thing but means you have developed the intrinsic
property of doing things right whether being watched or not.

Remember, You can have too much of a good thing – Anonymous, but you must be
able to use and save for the rainy day. Self-discipline is best found in ants.
Even when the ants have gathered enough in dry season, they still maximize the
dry season in order to save fully for rainy day. They so much understand the
times and abound with wisdom day by day.
There is no man who can’t identify
his limits to go far in life. Even when all the lucks of life are pushing him,
self-discipline will clearly tell you the limits you should go. Robert Greene
in the 48 laws of Power also advised one to know when to stop fighting. You
don’t need to outplay your masters to get to where you are going. ‘There are destiny helpers that have helped
you this far, acknowledge their effort and learn more under them, when they
know you can sail through life’s waters alone, they will let you go’.

you.' But maybe you should, if it prevents you from feeding yourself’ - Thomas Szas
